Women Drivers Hit the Road in Saudi Arabia June 2018
On June 24, women were granted the right to drive in Saudi Arabia. The declaration marks a historic step towards women’s rights in the Gulf Kingdom as they no longer need to rely on drivers or male relatives for transportation.
The issuance of the royal decree also gives women the ability to take driving lessons without first obtaining permission from a male relative and the freedom to drive anywhere they choose, making it easier for women to participate in the workplace. The decree is in line with a program called Vision 2030, promoted by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman, to improve the Saudi economy and modernize Saudi society.
